Source-verification note

Provider documentation and release notes were checked on September 1, 2026. This is a workflow guide, not an independent benchmark; verify plan availability and commercial terms before purchasing.

Methodology note: This guide verifies product capabilities from official provider sources as of September 1, 2026. It is not an independent image-quality benchmark. Vendor examples demonstrate intended capabilities, not guaranteed results. Check current pricing, privacy, content rules, and license terms before commercial use.

Image generators now differ as much in workflow as in output. One is built around conversational revision, another around visual style exploration, and another around self-hosting and API control. A single “best image generator” ranking hides the decision that matters: what must remain editable, repeatable, private, or licensable after the first image appears?

ChatGPT Images 2.0: conversational direction

OpenAI announced ChatGPT Images 2.0 on April 21, 2026. The official release page presents greater precision and control, multilingual typography, stylistic range, and examples of editorial layouts and text-rich designs [1]. Because image work happens inside a conversation, it is a natural candidate when the brief evolves through feedback: change the headline, preserve the layout, alter one object, or produce a localized version.

Those examples are provider demonstrations, not a controlled test. Before standardizing a production workflow, use your own stress set: small text, repeated characters, brand colors, a locked aspect ratio, and a sequence of edits that must preserve identity and layout.

Best evaluation scenario: marketing concepts, diagrams, posters, and other work where a non-specialist needs to direct revisions in natural language.

Midjourney: style systems and visual exploration

Midjourney’s current Editor documentation covers images generated in Midjourney and external uploads. It documents Remix, inpainting, Pan, Zoom Out, Smart Select, layers, custom aspect ratios, export, and an edit model for V8.x [2]. The Getting Started guide adds image prompts, style references, personalization profiles, moodboards, upscalers, variations, and image-to-video workflows [3].

That toolset makes Midjourney relevant when the job begins with visual discovery rather than a locked production template. Style references and moodboards can help a team explore a direction, while the editor can refine a selected frame.

Midjourney also states that users are responsible for the rights to uploaded images and for complying with applicable policies. Review visibility, privacy, and commercial-use terms for the current plan before placing client material in the service [2].

Best evaluation scenario: concept art, campaign mood, style exploration, and teams that organize visual references before committing to a final production system.

Stable Diffusion 3.5: deployment and control

Stability AI’s official Stable Diffusion 3.5 page describes Large, Turbo, and Medium variants. The company offers self-hosted deployment, an API, cloud partners, and a web interface [4]. Its documented image services include erase, inpaint, outpaint, background removal, search-and-replace, relighting, several upscalers, and controls based on sketch, structure, or style [4].

This is a different value proposition from a hosted creative interface. A team may evaluate Stability AI because it needs an API inside a product, wants to deploy within its own environment, or needs deeper customization. Those benefits introduce engineering and governance work: infrastructure, model versioning, safety controls, observability, and asset provenance.

The license is not simply “open and free.” Stability AI states that its Community License is available for individuals and organizations below $1 million in annual revenue, while commercial use above that threshold requires an Enterprise arrangement; the full agreement and acceptable-use policy control the details [5].

Best evaluation scenario: product teams and technical studios that need deployment options, structured editing APIs, or customized pipelines.

Adobe Firefly: verify before including in a shortlist

Adobe Firefly belongs in many creative-team evaluations because of its position in the Adobe ecosystem. However, the current official feature page was dynamically rendered and did not return usable content in this audit [6]. We therefore do not assign it a feature checklist or a licensing verdict here.

This is deliberate: a source-verified guide should say when evidence was unavailable. If Adobe integration is important, open Adobe’s current Firefly feature, pricing, and commercial-use pages at decision time, then record the exact claims and date.

A repeatable image test

Use the same five briefs in every shortlisted tool:

  1. A product scene with a fixed label and small readable text.
  2. A character shown across three angles with consistent clothing and features.
  3. A branded social card with exact colors and a locked layout.
  4. An edit that replaces one object without changing the rest of the image.
  5. A localization task that replaces English text with a non-Latin script.

Record prompt count, failed generations, time to an acceptable frame, edit preservation, export resolution, privacy mode, and license conditions. Keep the generated files and prompts. A portfolio screenshot cannot reveal how many attempts were discarded.

Decision

Choose ChatGPT Images 2.0 for conversational iteration and text-rich concepts, Midjourney for aesthetic exploration and reference-led art direction, and Stable Diffusion 3.5 when deployment flexibility and API control are requirements. Evaluate Adobe Firefly directly if Adobe workflow integration is central, but verify its current documentation rather than inheriting claims from an older comparison.

The correct tool is the one that survives your repeatability, editability, privacy, and licensing tests—not the one with the most impressive gallery.
